The Fifth Bar Sagi Prize (2023-2024 competition)

Administrator: Michele Bustin
Judges: Susan Bell, Itamar Blumfield, Amiel Schotz

The fifth Bar Sagi Young Poets Prize opened for submissions on November 15, 2023 and closed on February 29, 2024. We received 52 entries from 29 young poets — very similar to the number received last year, even though the entire submission period was taking place during the Gaza war following the horrendous Hamas attack on October 7th. And this year we apparently reached a wider audience: two of our winners, the First Prize winner and an Honorable Mention winner, came from our Druze community. We hope this competition will reach an even wider range of schools as time goes on.

The prize-winners:

  • First prize: “Harmony of Silence” by Talia Rabah, aged 16
  • Second prize: “Even someone you didn’t know still thinks about you” by Hadar Yadin, aged 16
  • Joint Third prize: “Unforsaken Love” by Almog Kobi, aged 16; and “Winter Friday” by Lotem Shperling, aged 15

Honourable Mentions (in alphabetical order of poem title):

  • “My Safe Place” by Naya Abu-Hmeed
  • “When the love dies it takes you with it” by Neomi Bechor, aged 15.

The awards event for the 5th Bar Sagi Young Poets Prize was held on April 14th, 2024. The texts of the winning poems and the Honorable Mentions may be read and downloaded here (PDF file).
