One of our most enjoyable national events is the yearly awards event for the winners of the Reuben Rose Competition, usually now held by Zoom..
The competition’s administrator and one or two of the judges give us their view of this year’s competition; we express our warm congratulations to the winners and recipients of Honourable Mentions, and — the highlight of the evening — hear them read their poems.
Since the results of the competition are announced around December, the awards event is held in April or May of the following year. In the past it was held in-person at a central location. In the Covid era it moved to Zoom, and today continues to be usually held via Zoom, immediately following the awards event for the Bar Sagi Young Poets Prize. Voices Israel members arrive “early” to be present for the Bar Sagi event, and many of the Bar Sagi poets and their families stay on for the Reuben Rose event — we welcome them all!
We usually have time at the end of the joint evening for a short Open Mic where Voices Israel members may each read one of their poems.
